Martini Thursday

Writer: WILLIAM A SLOAN WILLIAM A SLOAN

Straight up. Very, very cold. Very, very dry. Practically Windex.

A long time ago, Friday used to be martini night. It signified the end of the week and the beginning of a much too short weekend. I would come home from work, after a very long commute, and there it would be, lovingly placed on the kitchen counter under a baby spotlight by the Muse. A solitary vodka martini – very dry – practically desert-like, tall, beautiful in its’ ridiculously chic pewter and crystal triangle glass, utterly clear, calling my name, saying,”Hello Sloan. Come sit a spell and tell me all about it.” Ahhh...

Then, one day, after a memorably horrific week during my stint at the Manhattan ad agency/clown factory, I came home more stressed, frustrated and...did I say stressed?...than usual. It was a Thursday. And after my commute home, as I numbly walked through the front door, I was greeted by Marian McPartland on the CD player, massaging my defeated mood into a more pleasant disposition with her dulcet tones, and a familiar Friday spotlit presence revealing itself a day early.

“I figured you shouldn’t have to wait,” the Muse said. “The weekend starts now.”

And so it did. And so it has continued to be. It psychologically shortens the week and makes Friday feel like an opening act, rather than an inevitable long walk off a short pier. I do love a ritual and I do love a martini, though I’m comfortable enough with my own shallowness to admit that a good part of the appeal is the triangle glass.

Be that as it may, Thursday immediately became my favorite day of the week and has held that position ever since. All because Martini Thursday was thoughtfully conceived, symbolically direct, beautifully presented, allowing me to stop...just stop for a moment, feel special and kind of Stork Club-sophisticated, and, to paraphrase Iggy Pop, look out and see the end of complications. What could possible be better than that?
